Welcome to my website. This website is dedicated to the management of Temporomandibular (TMJ) Joint disorders and Orofacial pain. I graduated from dental school in Cork, Ireland in 1995. I worked as a general dentist for three years before embarking on an advanced training programme limited to Orofacial Pain Management and TMJ disorders at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1998. I completed a clinical training Residency programme at the UCLA medical centre and dental school and completed a Masters of Science in Oral Biology.
I returned to Ireland in 2001 and established my practice in Cork and Limerick which is devoted to the management of TMJ and Orofacial Pain patients. I have lectured locally, nationally, and internationally to dentists, medical doctors, ENTs, Pain Anaesthetists / Consultants, physiotherapists, osteopaths, endodontists, and multiple chronic pain support groups. I authored ‘Managing Orofacial Pain in General Practice’ published by Quintessence.
Patients who suffer from persistent jaw pain and facial pain will face several challenges. They may attend multiple healthcare professionals about their problem. Sometimes the diagnosis can be made easily, as in cases of obvious ear infection, sinusitis or dental abscess. Other conditions, however, can be considerably more difficult to diagnose and manage. One such condition is TMJ as it falls at the interface between medicine and dentistry. It is common for patients to complain of what they perceive to be an earache, headache, sinus infection or indeed toothache, only to be told that their examination is normal. In this scenario a TMJ related complaint must be rule out.
